Hello and thank you for dropping in!

I suspect that since you have made it this far into our website, that you are at least a little curious about the domestic church and what Intercessories Family Ministry can do to help you nurture this domestic church within your own home.

Let me begin by saying thank you for your curiosity. We live in a time where being Catholic is rather like having a big target on your shirt during hunting season. It is sometimes hard to speak out in defense of our beliefs when it is so much easier to just try to blend in with society. But what are we teaching our children when we do that? Do we want to teach them that their faith can be compromised or do we want to give them examples of strength and pride as we valiantly defend what Christ gave to us? Do we want to give them the impression that our faith is boring and unfulfilling, or do we want to show them what a great privilege and blessing it is to be a part of something so much larger than ourselves?

You may know in your heart that you need to bring the faith alive within your home, but probably don’t know where to start. Well, as the song in the Sound of Music goes, let’s start at the very beginning. You!

As mother of the home, you set the tone for the rest of the family. You hold much sway in how things operate in you home. And while the husband/father of the home may be the head of the home, you are the hands and heart. You make things happen and you do it with love.

When taking on the task of creating a domestic church, it is important to realize that no changes will be made in the family until there are changes made in you. Do you pray daily? Do you rely on Our Blessed Mother to give you the graces you need each day to get through all the things you need to accomplish? Do you make frequent use of the sacraments? And do you set a good example for your children, and if need be, to your husband, to show them how to live a virtuous life?

As this site continues to grow, I will be able to direct you to wonderful resources that will help you on your journey to holiness. This is a lifelong process, so do not get discouraged! I am learning new things every day – about my faith, about my family and about myself. And I am ever so thankful that Our Lord continues to reveal these treasures to me to help me grow closer to Him.

Intercessories, as an organization, firmly believes that it takes a family to change the world. Just one family at a time. And we hope that one family will be YOUR family! And we hope that we will be able to help.

Here are just a few tips to get you started.

  • Go to Mass! Have a Mass said for the intention of building your domestic church within your home. Ask for guidance, wisdom and perseverance as you grow into the Catholic family you were intended to be!
  • Each family has different needs, but all families have a need for prayer. Prayer is the base on which the domestic church is to be built, because without His guidance and without the graces we need, there will be no church. The Rosary, as many Saints and Mary herself has said, is the single most powerful prayer tool you have at your disposal. Praying the family Rosary every day brings everyone together for a reason greater than themselves. It is a sacrifice, and an act of faith, hope and love. Begin praying the family Rosary and watch the graces come your way!
  • Invite your parish priest to come and give a home blessing.
  • Create a family altar somewhere in your home. This can be a small table or a shelf on a wall. Decorate your altar with candles, statues, your bible and any other religious articles you may have that helps to bring your family together for prayer.
  • Hang a crucifix on your wall. At least have one above your family altar, and preferably in every room!
  • Get everyone in your family an age appropriate bible. It is easier to encourage scripture reading time if everyone has his or her own bible to read.

These are just a few beginning steps you can take to get the domestic church’s construction underway. Simply give your home a more Catholic atmosphere. After that, begin to dive into all that the liturgical year has to offer. Saint’s feast days, holidays, Lent and Advent – all of these are opportunities to educate and evangelize to your children and give you fun and memorable moments they will carry with them into adulthood when they themselves begin building their own domestic churches. Catholicism is not a Sunday morning religion. It is an exciting 24/7 way of life!

And be sure to share your creative ways of bringing the faith to life in your domestic church with us by emailing us HERE. I look forward to hearing from you!

We at Intercessories Family Ministry hold to be true all of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, through the Magesterium, Scripture and Tradition. We love and support our dear Pope Benedict XVI and would never willingly or knowingly present anything that which might lead anyone astray from the one true faith.
